The woman on the phone..

Before I share with you this story, I would like to apologize for my silence as of late – I am trying to change my life for the better, making it difficult to balance this blog. I would also like to thank you all for over 8,000 views and over 1,000 followers of the page, I haven’t been doing this long so you’re support means a lot to me personally, and it just shows how many of you are out there suffering in silence. My hope is we can all come to suffer in silence together.

So, on with the story..

I am currently applying for a lot of jobs, trying to figure out what interests me whilst being a sufficient income to cover my rent – I don’t want much, I don’t need much, I just want the freedom to continue writing and playing my music. Yesterday I applied for a Social Media position for a local company, the role sounded really interesting and in my cover letter I included the link to this blog, my other blog and my instagram account, as references to my content creation and ability of social media exposure. About half an hour later I got a call off the woman who was hiring for this position. I got excited, thinking I was going to get an interview at least as they would’ve just rejected me via e-mail, right? Wrong.

This very well spoken woman started the conversation telling me she was not hiring me for the position, as she needed someone with work experience in this area to help her launch her new campaign. I thought ‘fair, enough, but why is she ringing me?’ to which she went on to explain. She told me she viewed this blog, my website, and read a few posts, and she explained to me how she herself was struggling with anxiety. This woman, who owns her own business, very successful… a stranger, admitting to a nineteen year old boy over the phone about her years of suffering. She told me that she knows it is impractical, yet she cannot help it. She has suffered for years, and from the sounds of it not many people know about it. She went on to tell me that she loves what I am doing, and wished me the best of luck with trying to get the anxious of the world together in support of one another.

She hung up shortly after, but she really left me thinking. A smart and successful woman took time out of her busy schedule to confide in me – a stranger – about her mental health, which was a personal matter. There are more of us out there than we know, and this story just proves that it doesn’t matter who we are, we find it easier to confide in total strangers who we know suffer in the same way, than the people we love who do not. It’s fucked up but beautiful in the same way. All of us can help each other, as we all know how the other feels, we can sympathize and support in a way no other can.

I suppose the point to this post is to show that even the best of us can have mental health issues, and those with mental health issues can still be successful, regardless of the anxiety and self-doubt we experience on a day to day basis.

I shall leave you with one of the last things she said to me: “You’re right, anxiety really is a bitch”.

As always,

Peace.

Francis

  1. So true. I’ve barely had my blog a few months but i find writing it way more easy to do than open up to my friends and family.

  2. Hi, Mental health has such a big taboo and bias that is too strong to over come. I can see so many people aroungd me struggling. Some have anxiety, others are depressed and sad, but not willing to accept that there is some thing not right about their situation. They would confide in a complete stranger than, some ome one they know. It is the sad and hard truth, but the very reason that you are writing and i am commenting, on it, gives me hope that we are on the right path.
